Exceptional squire and pioneer of unprecedented term combining equestrian art, music, dance and comedy, Bartabas has invented and staged a new form of live performance: the equestrian theater.
“It is always difficult, a little bit imaginary, to claim to determine how’s that began, to determine the founding event of artist’s life, the first emotional shock. Why did I become an artist, and this artist?
To invent a shape of show as ours, an equestrian theater, supposes at first to accept the nomadic life, its liberties and its constraints, the freedom which is the essence but also the discomfort. So, hardly as it was spoken of “choosing” this life, that it is necessary to ask itself the question: is it a choice so deliberate?
Because we choose artist’s life before being an artist.
I shall be born artist a little later, when I shall begin to work the material that I chose. Because it is the relationship that the artist maintains with his material which creates him; it is the way he will know how to play with the constraints which the material dictates him which will make of him an artist.
The context of the 1970s incited to dash into the life without the slightest insurance. The street show which we practiced then with the Taken Theater (provoking interventions using characters of the commedia dell’arte) was resolutely in margin, there was even in us a kind of spite against the society, we aimed to be savages and rebels, I think that we were. We lived as stateless persons, citizens of the world who fed on countries which they crossed.
The artistic discipline which we created later, the equestrian theater, did not exist. We came from nowhere, we opened a new way, without knowing.
We lived in the present, there were then question neither of projects nor future.”
